After Brennan’s tenure at the Cape Cod Times and MassLive.com, Anne Brennan helped shape local journalism through print reporting and newsroom leadership. In a farewell column published in 2024, Brennan reflected on investigative reporting, newsroom leadership and an evolving media landscape which was shaped through advancements in technology. As she described reporting on stories that exposed challenges within society, such as, toxic chemical contamination at Joint Base Cape Cod which resulted in federal intervention and environmental monitoring. Her career demonstrates how journalism has transitioned from traditional print deadlines to expansion on the digital publishing platform. The New York Times reported that print subscriptions declined from 730,000 in 2022 to 660,000 by the end of 2023, highlighting the growing reliance on digital audiences. Although print once was the dominant factor to sharing news, it shifted through the years leading to editors and journalists to rethink, reshape, and realign with the way things now operate.
As she fostered a welcoming newsroom culture that was founded on integrity and creativity she encouraged other reports to pursue stories that elevated underrepresented communities. This reinforced her image as a public servant to the greater good. In this evolving media realm, editors shape journalism through presenting challenging stories to the masses. One moment that greatly impacted all of society was COVID-19. During this time in our lives, this required leadership from those in important roles. Through being transparent and sharing developing stories on various events, journalist are now required to engage across several platforms while behaving ethically. Through the advancements in technology such as podcasts on Spotify journalism will forever be changed. By blending traditional reporting v values with modern digital tools.
Brennan’s career reflects a broader transformation across journalism, where advancing technology reshapes how stories are delivered while the profession’s commitment to truth, accountability and public trust remains constant.
